FAQs

What is Online Distance Learning?
Online Distance Learning occurs when the learner and instructor are physically separated through all or part of a course but are connected through some type of Internet- based educational media in order to deliver content and to allow for interaction.

What kind of programmes does NODES offer?

NODES does not offer programmes of studies. It helps Sri Lanka's premier educators to develop and deliver online and distance learning.

Who does offer the programmes?
The institutions of learning offer the program, do the teaching, help the students to learn, assess performance, and certify success in the form of a certificate, diploma, or degree.

What is different about Online Distance Learning?
A lot. Online programmes are designed with the learner in mind.

The first question asked when developing a course is “What does the learner need to know” as opposed to traditional course development that asks "What is going to be taught”. The programmes are delivered by qualified instructors and lecturers trained in online delivery and result in accredited diplomas and degrees. Programmes have quality course and study materials and relevant testing and evaluation. They reflect current employment demand and use the latest educational technology for design and delivery.

Students participate in online interactive sessions that help them to develop communication skills and assignments that help further develop their thinking and language skills.

Students develop highly sought after soft skills that employers require: planning, communications, organizing, and working independently.

How Do I Know if I am eligible to enroll in a programme?
Eligibility for programmes is determined by the institution. Contact the institution to determine if you are eligible to enroll.

Are the programmes taught in English?
The language media include English, Sinhala, and Tamil. Check with the Partner Institution.

Are programmes costly?
The programmes costs are competitively priced and reflect local conditions.

Is some type of financial assistance offered?

Financial assistance is available to needy students under the Stipend Program. Contact the Project Office for more information.

Where do I take my programmes?

You can follow your programmes from home or work via the Internet or at the NODES Access Centres. By the year 2010, you will be able to use any one of the over 150 NODES Access Centers.

I don’t know how to use a computer. Can I still take a programme?

Yes. Students can access the programmes at any one of the NODES Access Centres that are part of the NODES. The NODES Access Centres are equipped with computers and supported by knowledgeable staff. See the list of Access Centre Locations.
